Rediscovering the Fun in Craft Shows

By Rita Horowitz

Just a few months ago, I never thought I'd be one who liked going to fairs. I never quite had the will power to go on those rides they always have, but watching from a distance is always enjoyable. I liked the fun and lively atmosphere these events always have and even though I go home tired afterwards, I have a feeling of satisfaction whenever I get home from a day at the fair.

It wasn't always like this at fairs, though. Not with me, at the very least. It was because of an unfortunate experience with a puppy-love first date during my teen years that my first ever boyfriend broke up with me at a fair. I'll spare you the details, but needless to say, I was publicly humiliated.

That said, you can understand my disdain for all fairs now.

As it happened, a friend of mine back in college contacted me a few months back. She was setting up a booth at a fair and wanted me there for some needed moral support. I decided it was time for me to grow up and be an adult. To face my fear, as the saying goes. I can't be dumped if I don't have a boyfriend at the moment, right?

I decided to just go for it and try attending a fair again after that fiasco the last time I was at one. And I have just discovered, I love fairs! So many interesting and lively sights to see, so many beautiful and worthwhile things to buy. But in the end, what really got me excited was something I thought I almost lost: My youth.

After seeing my friend doing her craft, it reminded me of my own desire to do something of a similar vein. I had an old interest in carving wood that I inherited from my grandfather. The fair helped awaken that artistic passion in me once again, and these days, you'll probably find me at a booth at a fair - 21151
